The Fastest Way to Lose Weight - Tips to Understand Your Motivation and Lose the Weight

The fastest way to lose weight is to understand that the motivation to lose weight is essential and will drive your experience of weight loss. Motivation/desire is essential to any change; literally nothing will happen without the natural motivational to act so whether you are going to go for a run, get a cup of coffee or eat a cake, desire is involved and at the heart of each process.

In order to maximise the desire to act we need to understand where this desire comes from and how, in terms of weight loss, we can keep the motivation going throughout the process. We also need to ensure that motivation is enjoyed throughout the weight loss process or as the person nears their goal, weight loss will tail off: this is why many find the last few pounds the most difficult, the need to lose weght has waned and so the drive and ability to lose weight goes away too.

So what is motivation?

This is a feeling driven by our values, ie. what is important to us at anytime. If something is important to us motivation occurs, simple. The more important it is the more motivation we 'feel'. However once a person changes what is important to them, motivation can disappear as quickly as it came.

A person will feel motivated to act in a certain way because an outcome is important to them: in terms of weight loss motivation can come for any reason like a simple look in the mirror that does not please or a comment or an anniversary of some kind or a new years resolution. In truth it does not matter what sparks the motivation but it is there and compels the person to make a decision and act.

So far so good but what then happens for many is their motivation disappears and the new years resolution made with such enthusiasm drains away. To understand this change in feeling is the key to successful weight loss because it provides the essential clue to the issue of why a person does not have the motivation to lose weight.

In the most simple of terms the 'feeling' motivation leaves because something MORE important than weight loss takes its place. For example in my own experience I was compelled for years to lose weight but the motivation would come passionately then leave. It became a standing joke that I would attempt to weight loss every New Year and fail! So what replaced the 'feeling' of motivation? Well for me it was fear that drove away the motivation, specifically fear that I could not succeed! Strange as it may sound it was more important to not feel the fear than to lose weight. For others I have worked with their drive to lose weight changed when they started to question whether they were 'worthy' to have a slim body?

So the motivational drive to lose weight is driven from a want to be slim but those who then struggle to maintain the motivation must explore into their thinking a little more. As I have said, the initial motivation will be replaced by something more important, the motivation to avoid something else, some other feeling or experience.

In the instance of the yoyo dieter or those who changes their minds about losing weight, the key to weight loss will be uncovering why you are avoiding being slim. Once you uncover that, you can lose weight quickly and easily and discover the fastest way to lose weight is to understand your values and maintain the initial feeling of wanting to lose the weight.

The key to success in maintaining this motivational drive is to constantly remind yourself of why you are wanting to lose weight and how it will feel to succeed. Find a way to do this as you lose weight and motivation is more likely to stay and drive you onto success.
