Get Inspired Through Looking At Popular Quotes About Life

By Marvin Reitzel

Anyone who utilizes social networking sites on a regular basis has probably utilized some famous quotes. Many of these people learned the hard way that posting a quote without looking it up first actually attracts critics. The most absurd Internet arguments have been sparked from a simple misquote, or a quote attributed to the wrong person.

Not only does it spark absurd controversy, but it creates opportunities for bullies to harass and embarrass others. The Internet culture has come to regard these people as trolls, and they can be difficult to ignore at times. When a troll goes trolling, it is their absolute goal to make people look foolish or stupid, or to otherwise bully someone they view as weak or intellectually inferior.

Sometimes things have been quoted incorrectly for so long, and by so many people, that the correct quote is nearly forgotten. Bits of dialogue from old movies are frequently misquoted, although the misquote often means the same thing as the original dialogue. There are instances where people might leave a quote from a book, but that quote might be slightly different from what was in the movie dialogue.

Using statements made by famous people in history can, at times, express a thought more clearly than a person is able to on their own. These statements become part of the myth of the culture, even when they are misquoted. At times, the statement changes with the culture, as the misquote is more pertinent to modern life than the original statement.

Quite often this kind of misquote occurs when one is repeating something said by a philosopher or scientist from the ancient past. Occasionally a misquote comes about simply as a mistranslation, or something of the true meaning being lost in translation. No matter how benign, a troll will use this misquote or misunderstanding to spark a flame war.

Of course, the behavior of these trolls says much less about the people they are trolling than what it says about themselves. A person who feels very powerless or pathetic in their lives can use a tool such as the Internet to bring other people down to their level. If one cannot ignore them, they are probably better off keeping their presence on the Internet as a silent one.

Some aspects of bullying have become so serious that social networking sites are demanding that people use their real names when they create a profile. One thing which has allowed this kind of trolling and bullying is the inherent anonymity of the Internet. Those who maintain social networking sites hope to lessen the bully problem by getting rid of that anonymity.

For those wanting to avoid giving the trolls something to feed on, simply doing a quick search before using famous quotes can prevent some problems. Not only is it important to make certain to get the quote correct, but it is helpful to make certain that credit for the quote is given to the correct person. Better to put the trolls in their place than to be embarrassed by them.
