The fast moving consumer goods sector is a great industry to choose to work in if you want to move up the career ladder quickly. Movement from an entry role position to a more senior role can happen quicker than in some other industries.

This article examines what you might expect to experience at each stage in your career.

As an entry level professional you should expect to take on at least two roles during this period such as a sales rep, assistant brand manager, HR advisor or manufacturing supervisor.

The next level in your career is management level which is where you will work in another couple of roles such as brand manager, purchasing manager, HR manager and key accounts manager. This stage of your career should centre around building your experience in people management.

When you are at middle management level you will want to gain a lot of experience within different roles and you should hopefully come across roles that will give you important international experience. Roles open to you at this level typically include IT managers, senior category managers and business integration managers.

The next stage on will be director level. To get to this stage you will need an impressive track record as well as lots of experience in people management. You will also need international experience in order to reach this level. Typically you will find roles such as finance controllers, global brand managers and finance controllers.

When you have worked at director level for a few years you will hopefully progress into a senior director level role. Here you will be expected to make a big impact in the arena

The final stage in your career should be senior executive level, at this level you might expect roles such as senior vice president, global sales, regional director and other vice president roles.
