Hypnosis - How Does "it" Work

By Eddie H. Gillis

Well, that depends on what you want to use it for. This article will help you cut through the marketing hype and find out what the scientific evidence is for the effectiveness of the most commonly sought-out hypnosis treatments. The information in this article is based on a review of current mainstream scientific research. Is Weight Loss Hypnosis Effective? Yes, hypnotherapy does help long-term sustained weight loss. The study "Hypnotic Enhancement of Cognitive-Behavioral Weight Loss Treatments" investigated the effectiveness of adding weight loss hypnosis to cognitive-behavioral treatments. The study came to the conclusion that hypnosis improves the effectiveness of a weight loss program.Does Hypnosis Help Quitting Smoking? Yes, hypnotherapy does help long-term success in quitting smoking.

Everyone I hypnotize like this says one thing: "I knew I could do the opposite of what you were telling me but at the same time I couldn't". Which begs the question "does hypnosis work for everyone?". To be honest it does not work for everyone. There are some people these hypnosis demonstrations don't work on. In most cases you can see it begin to work and the person becomes stubborn and refuses to participate in what is going on. Just like some people felt like they could do the opposite of what I was saying and let themselves play along, these people feel that they can do the opposite of what I'm saying and try their hardest to do so.

Is Relaxation Hypnosis Effective? Yes, hypnotherapy does help with increasing relaxation.Several scientific studies have investigated relaxation hypnosis, and have found it to be effective. In summary, the British Medical Journal's article "Does Hypnosis Work for Relaxation?" states that there is good evidence that hypnosis can help promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. Can Hypnotherapy be Used to Treat Depression? Maybe, but more research is needed. In a 1998 study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry to research the effectiveness of complementary therapies for depression, researchers found no conclusive evidence that hypnotherapy helps with depression. Those researchers did note that there was limited evidence that relaxation therapies (which include hypnosis) can help with depression, but more research is needed for conclusive results.

We have all seen enough hypnotists performing stage shows that we can at the very least say it appears to work. Generally when people ask me the question, "does hypnosis work?" what they really want to know is does hypnotherapy work. It's all well and good to get someone into a trance and tell them about making some great change in their lives, but does it actually do anything? And finally are the effects of hypnosis permanent?

More correctly, the human system is a "body-mind" connection rather than the "mind-body" connection. You are a body first and a mind second. So many highly intelligent people forget that. Why do we claim you have a body-mind connection? Your body controls your mind. As a quick test to prove this to yourself, just take a deep breath in and hold it. Hold it as long as you can. After a few minutes your body will override your conscious will to hold your breath and force you to exhale and take another breath.

Can Hypnosis Treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome? Yes, hypnotherapy is highly effective for treating irritable bowel syndrome. The International Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, GUT, has reported that in patients under 50 hypnosis can have a 100% success rate in treating irritable bowel syndrome. If you already know how to do hypnosis then you are certainly excited to use it. You have this feeling that you can hypnotize absolutely anyone on the planet. You have this feeling that you are always in control. You feel that you can convince anyone to do what you please. Unfortunately, hypnosis does not work on everyone. Even if you know how to do hypnosis, you won't be able to use it on everyone.

Hypnosis does not work on everyone in the world. One type of person that hypnosis will be ineffective is for people with an I.Q. that is below 70. If you are not that intelligent then here's one reason that can make you happy. If someone tries to manipulate you using hypnosis then they will be unsuccessful. Hypnosis works better with people in the 100 plus I.Q. range. Since hypnosis involves a lot of imagination and creativity, people that have low I.Q. will simply find it hard to keep pace.

Now this is just my personal experience with people who have come to me for help. For this next section I'm going to look at articles and studies that have been conducted on the effectiveness of hypnosis. On the topic of smoking, there was a 2010 study(2010 Jan;52(3):177-81) looking at the effectiveness of previous hypnosis studies for the cessation of smoking. They strongly critiqued the claim of many hypnotherapists that hypnosis was the most effective method for quitting smoking. They did however conclude that hypnosis was just as effective as any number of methods smokers could use to quit.

If you are planning to hypnotize the rest of the world then your bubble has just popped. You can not hypnotize everyone in the world. The only people that can be hypnotized are those that are willing to be hypnotized. This means that you can not go out there and try hypnotizing everyone in your path.Does hypnosis work one hundred percent? Even when a subject wants to be hypnotized, there will be a lot of occurrences where people will not enter the trance state. Entering the trance state demands experience and practice. If you are going to be hypnotized then you better start practicing. Entering the trance state or that state of altered reality demands patience and practice. You may not reach it at the first attempt but sooner or later, you will eventually do so. Hypnosis does not work one hundred percent and it does not work on everyone on this planet. You'll need to know that before you end up making a fool out of yourself.
