Facts About The Reading Disorders

Reading is actually one of the most entertaining hobbies. It gives one an experience which is similar to that of watching films. However, many says that reading is more fun since you are the ones who will generate the visualizations and you would feel the situations more vividly as if you are the protagonist in the story.

But that aside, it also has more benefits rather than just recreation. It helps you with your academic accomplishments and your dealings with your everyday life too. Basically, this skill holds a great significance to your understanding of circumstances and instructions in order to do things right. That is why it is important to know how to read. But if there are factors impeding your understanding of written words, then you might have some kind of reading disorders.

This disorder is identified if there is a recognizable impairment in reading such as in speed, accuracy, and comprehension. But it is only diagnosed to be a disability if the impairment goes to as much as affecting the academic achievement of a person as well as his daily living. In other terms, people call this disability as dyslexia.

But it is not quite the case, since dyslexia usually involves deficits in the area of spelling and writing. Basically, this disorder is defined as a learning disorder which is characterized by a valuable disparity between the general intelligence of the person and his skills in reading. It is the case where one experiences severe difficulty in displaying the skill even with normal intelligence.

It is actually far from the assumption that one who has this disorder is not at all intelligent, but that, it is part of the many learning disorders. Speaking of learning disorders, they actually refer to some kind of difficulty in learning as well as poor performance in academics. However, it is not associated to low intelligence, mental retardation, lack of learning opportunities, and other common learning disabilities.

It is just that this impairment persists even to people who are of normal intelligence, sufficient educational opportunities, and the motivation to learn how to read. It this impairment, there is a very valuable gap between the expected performance level as well as the actual achievement. So it is very much like the case of those with mathematical and language disorders.

So common problems which people with this impairment have include the following. One is poor comprehension when reading a material either orally or silently. Another is omission of words and reversal of letters. Aside from that, they may also encounter difficulty in decoding single words and associating them with sounds. They also have limited vocabulary.

Basically, the cause of this disability has been identified by researchers as the effect of mutations of specific genes which are associated to language skills. It was also discovered that it does not have much to do with genetic inheritance since ninety percent of people with this disability do not come from lineages which have the impairment. It is identified that it pertains to some disability in the brain function especially in the language area.

But since this disability wastes much of what has to be perform in life, treatments were identified. Basically, the approach may vary since it has been agreed that the diagnosis be catered to. This means that the instruction would be customized as to the particular area of impairment an individual suffers.
