The secret of change is to focus everything on creating what you can in the present, and letting yourself slip out of the past and the future.
How will we really change?
I am not talking about the sort of change that lasts for just a few months and then we go back to the same things we usually used to do. No, I am talking about that everlasting change that permits us to move forward with our lives and leave our old ways behind. This is true change, change that will last forever. The secret is to commit everything you have in your life to building what you can in the moment.
The past will hold you down and the future will show you the greatest lie and mirage of a place where it all turns out. Both these imaginary places are stunningly threatening because they keep us from being in action in the moment. Even though we can go there in our heads, we have to avoid living in these places at all costs.
Change isn't going to be straightforward. Consider how many of us attempt to make big changes the on the first of the year. Statistically nearly half of people who make New Years Resolutions fail by mid February. That disconnect is huge. So there must really be something incredibly broken with that technique.
So what are we able to do?
Focus all your energy one thing, each day, to make yourself a smidge better than the day before and do that for as long as you really can. Absolutely do not get obsessive about the quantum leap where everything changes all at the same time - it is a lie. Target the daily chores you can perform and over a period of time you will change more than you could possibly ever imagine.
Start the voyage of change now, one step at a time.
Don't wait.
