A Background Review Of The Tempe United Church Of Christ

By Elizabeth Edwards

The foundation upon which the Church of Christians was formed is known as the Protestant Christian Denomination. Tempe United Church of Christ rapid development has been noticed through the establishment of over five thousand different churches that host several millions of congregants across the world. It greatly considers upholding human rights and interfaith efforts.

Two Protestant Churches merged up to form the unit and these are the Evangelical and Reformed temple and the General Council of that Congregational Christian Churches. This merge up attracted close to two million new members. Four years after the coalition, the denomination went ahead and came up with its own constitution and the laws to follow across all the constituent churches.

Each of the constituent churches is allowed its own form of worship, as that body has not restricted them to a certain way. Despite all that, there are some shared beliefs across all the different churches such as the belief on the need for evangelism. In addition, the churches share a similar belief in getting to know how the old literature in the Bible has a direct relation with the occurrences in our day to day living.

Freedom of worship and thinking is also advocated for through the other forms of literature present in the body. The head of the denomination is acknowledged to be Jesus Christ, Son of God and Savior. The Holy Communion and Baptism are recognized as the two forms of sacraments and the Holy Spirit is also placed at high respect.

The core belief held by the denomination is the need to be in unity and help unite other believers all across the globe. A good portrayal of this is the effort to bring together nine denominations in America to worship in unison. Furthermore, it has worked in coming up with theological views that are created by a council of churches united worldwide.

The most recent unison was with the United temple of Canada and it was aimed at creating similar ways of participating together in missions, ministry and worship. In the unison, the two denominations could take similar sacraments and be preached to by all the ministers within the unit. In addition, Muslims and Jewish communities have been included in several agreements by the body.

The denomination has set one basic unit that is referred to as the local church or commonly termed as the congregation. Each of the churches is given the freedom to come up with their own ways of governing the congregation. It is for this reason that some churches are governed by several individual boards within it whereas others are governed by one central council within the unit.

The congregants within the body have acquired a great deal of freedom of worship due to the already set standards. The institution has however faced some criticisms in matters of political views, theological differences and social issues. Some of these social issues that have been matters of concern include the favoritism of same sex marriage by the body and allowing of campaigns in their mass services.
