How A Personal Development Coach Helps His Clients Grow

By William Hughes

People used to want only to be safe, to be fed and to be comfortable. Millions of people have long ago achieved those goals. Now they want more out of life. Hey think there is more to life than they can see. They want to experience meaning and purpose. They want to be happier and they want to know what their place in the bigger scheme of things is. With a personal development coach many people do discover deeper meaning in life.

Most people that experience a need for a higher level of self actualization do not know how to approach the issue. As a consequence, they may stumble from religious teachings to a wide variety of philosophies, searching for something they cannot clearly define. Others think that they will find happiness and fulfilment in doing community work or by bettering their qualifications. In such cases, coaches can be of great value.

It is important to understand that coaches are not magicians. They cannot teach their clients instant tricks and techniques that will bring about change quickly. They are guides, not teachers that can teach formulae that will deliver instant results. They do not tell their clients what to do or how to do it. They motivate and encourage their clients and they help them to remain focused on the important issues.

Experienced coaches know that most people do not know themselves. It is too painful to carefully examine the self. The first priority of coaches is therefore to lead there clients towards a greater sense of themselves, even if the process is painful. It is only when one knows all the strengths and weaknesses that comprise the whole that one can identify areas where improvement is necessary.

Self examination inevitably lead to the identification of areas where improvement or growth will be beneficial. Identifying these areas is important, but it is also important to set very specific goals. It is not good enough, for example, to say that one will spend more time on community work. The goal should be more specific. It would be better to say that one wants to spend at least three hours each week performing community work.

People fail to achieve their goals because they become disheartened with their slow progress. That is why good coaches help their clients to break down their goals into small, measurable steps that are easy to achieve. By achieving each little step, the client will realize and be motivated by the fact that he is indeed making progress towards the achievement of the bigger goal.

Top coaches know that they need to establish a close relationship with their clients. Clients need to know that they can trust their mentors. They must be able to be totally honest and never fear that their deepest desires and wishes will be revealed. Choosing a mentor is therefore a trial and error affair. It may be best to try a few until one feels comfortable with a specific individual.

Many people need some direction in their lives. They may recognize the fact that something is missing, but they do not know how to go about the business of remedying the situation. This is where coaches can be of great value. They are impartial but efficient in helping their client to identify their needs and to devise strategies to fulfil those needs.
